Moving is almost always stressful, and not just for humans—it’s tough on dogs, too. If you’re moving with your dog, you can make the process a little less painful by following these tips before, during, and after your move.
Plan Ahead
Decide how you will be moving your dog. The distance of the move and how you plan to travel, may factor into your decision for your dog 🚗🛩 Check out our relocation guide for some tips on planning ahead.
Keep a Routine
Keep your routine as close to normal as possible. Maintain the same number of potty breaks, treats, walks and feedings as normal throughout the moving process 👍🏼
Pack Your Dog’s Stuff Last
Dogs are creatures of habit and love to be surrounded by things that are familiar; like their bed, blankets and toys; save your pup’s stuff for the end 🦴🎾i
Don’t Wash Their Bedding
When moving, you may want to clean everything– but stop at your dog’s items. Keep them smelling just like your pup. That familiar scent can help him feel more at home in a new location ❌🧼
Pack a Travel Bag
Pack a special bag with food/water, travel bowls, toys, blankets, crate, leash, and poop bags 🎒
Get Copies of Health Records
Keep these handy in case of an emergency, and to give to your new Vet 📄
Take Breaks
If you’re driving to your new home, don’t forget to take breaks- giving yourself and your dogs the opportunity to potty, move around, stretch, eat and get some fresh air 🚗🙆🏻♀️
Settling In
When you arrive, let them explore outside, then walk your dog around the home so they can sniff & explore. Restrict your dog’s access to only certain rooms where you can keep an eye on them, to avoid potty accidents 🦮
Update Your Dog’s Info
Order new tags, update their microchip info online with your new address, find a new vet nearby, and register your pet in your new city if needed 💻
Give them Time
Don’t be surprised if your dog does not want to eat or has potty accidents. All these are normal for a dog under stress. Give them time to calm down and adjust to their new home. Show your dog their food & water bowls, bed/crate, toys; everything that is familiar to them to let them know this is their home now 🏡💛
